Placozoa adalah filum hewan invertebrata yang memiliki struktur paling sederhana dari semua hewan. Mereka umumnya diklasifikasikan sebagai spesies tunggal, Trichoplax adhaerens, meskipun ada keragaman genetik yang cukup sehingga mungkin ada lebih dari satu spesies dengan morfologi yang sama. Placozoa pertama kali ditemukan pada tahun 1883 oleh ahli zoologi Jerman, Franz Eilhard Schulze (1840-1921) dan sejak tahun 1970-an secara lebih sistematis dianalisis oleh Karl Gottlieb Grell (1912-1994). Walaupun begitu, takson ini belum memiki nama umum (contohnya Porifera yang memiliki nama umum spons); nama ilmiahnya sendiri secara harfiah berarti "hewan datar".




Ciri


Placozoa hanya memiliki satu anggota, Trichoplax yang merupakan hewan kecil, berbentuk pipih dengan diameter sekitar 1 mm. Seperti Amoeba, hewan ini tidak punya bentuk jelas, permukaan bawahnya agak cekung, dan bagian atasnya rata. Tubuhnya terdiri dari lapisan luar epitel sederhana yang melingkupi lembaran sel-sel stellata yang menyerupai mesenkim hewan yang lebih kompleks. Sel-sel epitelnya mempunyai flagelum, yang ia gunakan untuk merayap di dasar laut.
Permukaan bawahnya menelan partikel-partikel organik kecil sebagai makanan. Hewan ini bereproduksi secara aseksual dengan mengeluarkan tunas.




Hubungan evolusioner



Tidak ada catatan fosil yang meyakinkan dari placozoa, organisme yang kelihatannya berkerabat dengan filum ini adalah Dickinsonia yang berasal dari zaman Prakambrium 550 juta tahun yang lalu.
Ilmuwan mengklasifikasikan hewan berdasarkan tingkatan organisasi seperti adanya jaringan dan organ yang hanya dimiliki hewan tingkat tinggi, sehingga Placozoa yang tidak punya hal di atas dianggap sebagai hewan paling basal (atau paling dasar dalam pohon filogenetik). Akan tetapi tidak adanya jaringan atau organ bisa saja karena memang fitur ini hilang dalam generasi selanjutnya (contoh lainnya chondrostei seperti ikan sturgeon terdiri dari sebagian besar tulang rawan, tetapi ilmuwan memasukkannya dalam kelompok ikan bertulang keras, karena secara kekerabatan lebih dekat dengan mereka dibanding ikan bertulang rawan seperti Pari dan Hiu; Ikan sturgeon kehilangan sebagian besar proses osifikasi/pengerasan tulang yang dimiliki nenek moyangnya), sehingga klasifikasi dengan dasar tidak adanya jaringan atau organ tidak bisa digunakan sebagai klad.

Ilmuwan sekarang mengklasifikasikan Placozoa lewat deret DNA di genom mereka; hasilnya Placozoa ditempatkan di antara spons dan eumetazoa, sehingga walaupun terlihat sebagai hewan paling sederhana mereka bukanlah hewan paling dasar di pohon filogenetik.
