Theorbo adalah sebuah alat musik petik dari keluarga kecapi, dengan leher panjang dan kotak pasak kedua. Seperti kecapi, theorbo memiliki kotak suara melengkung-belakang (kotak berlubang) dengan bagian atas kayu, biasanya dengan lubang suara, dan leher memanjang keluar dari kotak suara. Seperti halnya kecapi, pemain memetik atau memetik dawai dengan satu tangan sambil "resah" (menekan ke bawah) dawai dengan tangan lainnya; menekan senar di tempat yang berbeda di leher menghasilkan nada yang berbeda, sehingga memungkinkan pemain untuk memainkan akord, garis bass dan melodi.
